    Could you replace one of the resistors in the 555 timer with a potentiometer to evenly vary the speed? If so, which one?

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap День назад

      The 555 timing resistors and capacitor are close to fully adjustable. Just want to make sure there's always resistance between the + supply and the discharge pin for the full supply voltage. And if you use low resistance between capacitor and discharge pin, then you want to use a low value capacitor so there's not a lot of current when it discharges instantly. If a potentiometer can be set too low, then you want a fixed resistor of minimum value in series with it.

    NICE VIDEO!! Yes, If both the LED's are on while hooked to the same HC output, they are oscillating. It would be very interesting to see how a decoupling cap (TAN. 0.1uF), connected to the power and gnd pins of the IC (on your breadboard) would effect this 'critical' region'. Back in the day (decade) when I was designing PCB's, I would place the decouple caps UNDER the IC (it was in a socket) so I could get the leads as short as possible. Many times this cap is absolutely critical.... the fact that they always made the power and gnd pins of these IC's as far away apart as possible (diagonally), is still a mystery to me. Also,another odd thing...I zapped a couple cmos chips while using a wrist grounding strap!! It turned out that the IC was at a high static potential and the surge of current to ground zapped it. The solution was to always have the ic in conductive GROUNDED foam...I vividly remember some pretty significant electrical shocks when I touched the conductive foam grounded to earth. I keep about a square foot of foam attached to my bench directly running to the green wire!

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap 2 дня назад

      Good info, thanks for sharing! I do not remember ever knowing when I fried an IC, they just stopped working, and when I swapped it with the backup IC, it worked. I do know that I took no precautions at all when first using CMOS ICs to see if they actually fry as easily as people say. I handle the 555 timers and LM358 op amp ICs a lot without precautions and I don't remember damaging any of them unless I dropped one and accidently stepped on it. Now I try to always discharge myself before touching CMOS ICs, and I think doing so is saving a lot of them. Each one of these videos is another experiment to see how delicate they are. If these videos do well, I plan to buy a bunch of ICs from whatever supplier has the best reputation, and comparing them to the discount ones that are available.

    Hi there! I'm totally new to using this device. My dad was an electrical wizard and had probably every device or tool you can think of, but now that he has passed away I'm trying to use his things to troubleshoot issues I have around my house. Please bear with me as I'm not well versed in these things! Currently my dishwasher is on the fritz; it will not turn on but I wanted to further diagnose the issue before buying random parts or a whole new dishwasher. I saw a video about how to test the voltage coming from the black and white wires underneath the dishwasher, and the video said the voltage should be 120 v. When I use my oscilloscope (the exact model you have in your video), I get a reading of 0.108 v. Am I supposed to ignore the decimal?? Your device looks like mine when nothing is happening (reading 0.000 v), but I see yours changes to 04.98 v when you tested voltage (the decimal place moved). Am I doing something wrong, or is my reading indicating that I have an issue with the breaker?? Thank you in advance!

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap 3 дня назад

      Thanks for watching! 120V is probably AC, so make sure it is measuring AC instead of DC. AC will probably average out to 0V if the meter is displaying it as DC. Oscilloscope is for measuring rapidly changing voltages more than simple voltages. I'd use a multimeter with an AC voltage setting, or a voltmeter to measure most appliances. I don't have any tips for adjusting oscilloscope settings, I just kind of try things out until I get good settings for what I am measuring.

    Could you have solar panel walls and capture some of the energy used in lighting indoor homes?

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap 5 дней назад

      When I was a kid, it was common to come across calculators that had solar cells to power the calculator under lamp light. I don't know how effective larger panels are at collecting indoor light, but you should be able to if you really wanted to. I'd only seriously invest in something like that if I was also planning on setting it outdoors if the power went out or something. The Indoor light might keep batteries fully charged after being charged if they are not being used much. Maybe just use them daily to charge a cell phone or something. I'd test it out with smaller cells like these, or another low priced setup, and see if they can keep a portable power bank charged before trying to go larger.

    This video brought something back to mind: (I needed LIGHT=ON... reverse polarity from your circuit and PNP...I would have to find the schema to be sure) I remember with a circuit...it turns out that if you 'very carefully' place the LDR in the correct proximity with the LED, the 'leakage light' from the LED can give a sort of POSITIVE FEEDBACK to the LDR and cause the LED to snap-on much faster...avoiding that slow turn-on area. I tried several variations of this, but finally got it to work....depends much on the brightness of the LED. It looks like you are using a low-brightness LED though, IIRC mine was green or blue...the color made a difference.

    • @Electronzap

      I don't think so, I'd see what companies use to switch something like that and compare it.

      @@Electronzap Appreciate it 🙏 I've noticed a higher current version on the module XH-W1209 which is advertised for heaters up to 15-20A on Alibaba btw, but not sure if it's really up to the task :)

      @@Electronzap I just saw ruclips.net/video/KzR7EtPM15E/видео.html and I think it actually looks sturdy enough to do the job since I've opened the motor and the contact plates within it looked about the same caliber.

    They are on Amazon but everything is in Chinese so unless you can get it translated , it’s a guessing game.
